Personal Comparison of N900 vs Iphone 3gs

Let us help you decide your next Phone!

it is really hard for me to writing this comparison, one of my friend asked me to write. I can't resist........and also sorry cause my english is not that good!

I will not go for any hardware or technical details of this two device since i believe symbian freak members know it all. just to say, iphone only has 2 microprocessors, cortex a8 and sgx 535, and 256 mb ram. N900 has system on chip, 3 microprocessors, 1 a8, 1 for data and media, and sgx 530. with 256 mb ram and 768 mb swap ram. so in theory n900 is more powerful than iphone. iphone's only advantage is powervr sgx 535 can handle 28 million polygons per sec, where n900 530 can only handle highest 14 million. so in graphics iphone is more powerful.

now for everyday experience.

I am using iphone 3gs around 2 months. though my iphone was factory unlocked, i jailbreak it for more functionality. screen is good enough. there is a lots of games and applications you can find on net(.ipa format actually). to be honest, there are so many games that you cant resist yourself from it(some of this like street fighter 4, nfs shift, alive 4 ever etc etc). i play with this beauty for hours and hours lol. graphics are awesome. ipod media player for playing music, videos and podcast is great. this is the greatest music player i have ever seen on any mobile device. i like pinch zoom, multitouch in photo and web browser. safari is good bt no flash support. gps works good also with turn by turn navigation. now for sound quality. i read a lots of review that iod and iphone sound quality are awesome. but in practical, i do not think so. i tried iphone with my etymotic 6i in ear headphone. treble and mid are awesome, but there is a cut off bass. may be iphon's wide range support is a reason. when i tried with bass booster from rock(equalizer), sound was good at low volume, but at high it was just terrible. battery lasts for 1 days if heavy use, 2 days if normal use. camera quality is good in outdoor, and video recording is good also.at indoor both still and video suffer for low light condition.and ya, iphone never hang, at least not mine. believe it or not. why? may be cause you cant open back cover to open battery and than replace it! lol........

I am using N900 only for 3 days now lol. so i do not give a full review of it. but all i can understand, it is a great device. maemo os has great functionality. 1st thing is it not hang for a single time in last 3 days(my n97 hanged 3-4 times everyday). super fast comparing to n97 and a true multitasking device. i do not feel like using a mobile, i feel like i am using a netbook. mojila browser is just awesome. switching between window(task manager, multitasking) is really easy. i ran 17 programs last night! and believe me it still working with no hang at all. sound quality is better than iphone in my opinion, i will tell you this later. display is sharp. i do not feel 65k any bad at all. though display brightness is a bit low compare to other mobile. it is still readable. it support divx out of the box, i tested it and its great. but i still use xmediarecode for full screen video and movie. to be honest, camera is better than iphone 3gs but not good like n97. no night mode, no video light makes it even worse. in video recording, video quality is good.but it cant maintain 25 fps. i do not know why, but i think future firmware will fixed it. customizing linux os is really fun. and it is more functional than iphone 3gs in this way. although there is a lot of apps for maemo, but no competitive games for maemo to compare with iphone. battery lasts for 1 day if heavy usage, and for almost 2 days if normal usage.

now direct compare. if you say screen resolution, n900 is clear winner. but if you say brightness, n900 totally loose to iphone 3gs, n900 5 bar highest brightness not even close to apples half brightness. so everytime i play with my n900 right after iphone, just see dark.......i do not agree with gsmarena or other website. they said they have sound testing device and bla bla(like freq of iphone is +0.01 to -0.01 or something, and n900 +0.10 to -2.00 or something, + means bass and - means treble.). but in my opinion, n900 has better sound quality even without any equalizer than iphone. i test same music and acceptable volume in both iphone and n900 with same earphone(etymotic). n900 sounds better, and with equalizer, it is better than normal. web browsing experience is better in n900. n900 has petrovich for bluetooth data transfer, but for iphone, you need to jailbreak 1st and than install ibluetooth or other apss, and sometimes it does not work. in gps, n900 locate my position faster than iphone. n900 only problem is i did not find any solution to install any apps from pc like iphone, so you have to use unlimited or at least 2 or 3gb internet package from your operator if you wants to loads thousands of apss in your n900. by the way, iphone cant install apps and games on its own, you need itunes. cant write more, i mean may be later.

last word, iphone is fun mobile. lots of fun with games, apps, os etc. n900 is a serious mobile. it is world's tiniest linux based netbook with phone call functionality. so you know what i mean. here is an example.

Iphone is like, you are ready to enter your ready made flat. cool but you cant customize it on your own.

N900 is like, you will have a land and ingredients to make your own flat. means you can customize it turn by turn, inch by inch.

that is all.................

You missed on a detail, the screen isnt 65K colors, its 16.7M colors.

Nice review, i like that you are neutral. Reviews from other sites (This site excluded) bias the iphone like if it was Jesus and we were trying to find his reincarnation.
But you didnt. (This sounds like Idol or something... :P )
Amazingly, this personal review sounded casual.

Well, according to RMAA tests results, nokia appears to be the winner compared to some sony phones so, i wont bother to talk
about iphone performance in that area.
In any case, i like the way you approached the two products
and i do agree, that you did it in a neutral way.
What comes up by your saying, is the bottom line:
Those are two completely different products...
Very nice review. :yeah:

Indeed, Mikey.
I already have plans of what i will do when i get it. First i will inject my 8Gb memory card and load in music and such.
Then i will install apps and such that i want.
Later i will attempt having a dual-boot with Gentoo Linux! (Using a memory card.)
