    Very bad point II

U don't like something around here!?!

Postby Bec » 13 Dec 2009, 07:57

So for the last day I was trying to install the maemo 5 sdk on linux mint...

Besides the fact that instead of downloading a whole app you download a .py file that needs to be run via a console there are "other" dependencies such as PyQt that... well why in the world should they come compiled????

So I gave up.

What I don't get, is why the hell do we have a maemo freak front page if we have a maemo forum that doesn't offer anything? Where does the freak part come in?

Can't we !PLEASE! have the games & apps section split AND add a support and modding threads?

Not all of us have used linux and most of us don't know their way around it so a Q&A/SUPPORT/TUTORIAL section would be highly welcome!

THANKS

Explain to me why you believe that we suddenly will have a lot more knowledge of members if we create two more sub-forums. This place is depending of its members, the team itself is not an omniscient oracle who can give answer for everything.

Maemo is new for almost all of us and it will take some time before we have good knowledge in the forum. If we create two more sub-forums which will be nearly empty of messages doesnt change this. If you dont get an answer today in games & apps, I dont think you will have it in support either since there are too few memebers that know the answer.

Well we do have a well developed forum for symbian so I think the maemo forum should look the same.

It's not about getting support, but about creating it. I'm a total linux noob and I believe/hope some of the "older" members could provide a way to start for the rest of us.

For example if there was a maemo support thread I would have liked to express my maemo sdk issues and maybe get some help...

And if there ain't no modding forum, no modding will ever take place here because most of the members will migrate on maemo.org for that...

The thing is Bec, this forum has grown over time as needed and as new parts are needed for maemo freak then they will be added and sorted out, maemo is so new, there is only one phone runnin this os, who knows it may fall flat in two months, so like the product, give it time to mature and find its feet, rather than us makin new sections for something that might not be a success for nokia

Well since they only release ONE device/year it's hard to say when/if it will be a success or not.

I tried linux and it blew me right off... many apps don't even come compiled and you have to install them via a "cmd" terminal window...

I wanted to download a simple maemo app to my pc... I got an install file that pointed to a vague url location... anyway not enough to get the file without linux.

On symbian all went straight, the apps were nicely compiled and packed in .sysx and whenever I wanted to mod smthg sisware did the trick.

Now I can barely get hold of the .deb file itself as for packing it back or editing I have no idea.

My device should arrive this week but my first encounter with linux (mint) has already been extremley unfriendly.

So really what good is it to have a maemo front page if there's nothing behind it?

AND

Must maemo look as unfirendly as all other linux distributions?
"Not a linux geek? F*** OFF!"

AND

The pc forum offers more support, but we don't have a PC-freak frontpage, do we?

Ok, first of I'm speaking from a non tech point of view, second off, I've never seen maemo and Linux gives me a head ache. But, as I said, sf grew over time, sections were added, teo took a gamble, like everyone buying an N900, its a gamble, the biggest gamble by nokia who have said they will only release one other maemo device next year. We will expand as needed, maemo Ask Guru, maemo Modding etc, but like nokia would say, give it time, patience

EDIT: PS. The dev section aint just for symbian; but things have to grow

My problem exactlty!
I've just experienced mint and from what I've seen on maemo they're very much the same.
Soon my N900 should be here and I've no place to document & share hacking & tricks on my new device. There is maemo.org, but SF was until now my favorite forum...

But if this is the atitude here I'll switch to maemo.org until/IF I'll get a symbian once again; in the curent state I have no use of this forum.

Maemo extra download catalogues

As an example of what we should have in a support/modding section, unfortunately other sites will now be ahead of us although we have plenty of members who probably like me, would like to post & read tech tutorials and modding.
