does it still worth the purchase?
Let us help you decide your next Phone!

So... Long time since i posted anything on sf. I have been using my N82 since its launch and i have to say i was more than happy with it (since i don't have a digital camera)!
BUT! applications became more scarce over time as expected. Being an power PC used and internet/IM/application freak i was really looking forward to get the N8, but the lack of keyboard kinda drove me away from it.
I've been searching for another phone for the last couple of weeks to replace my trusty N82 until i found about N900 (its marketing sucks/ed).
For over 3 days now, I've been watching youtube video reviews and read several articles and I feel right at home.
So my question is. Does it still worth the purchase? Should I wait a bit longer? I've seen that maemo still waits for a big update.
Gimme your thoughts.
PS: I've used Linux before so I know that apps won't be a problem.

@ethaniel
Im in the same predicament as you.
I have a e71 and use that as my work horse but i also wanted to get the n900 but was discourage when i found the new os may not work on it,
I've been waiting since sept (my phone contract ended June!!!) for the supposedly nokia n9 (the upgrade to the n900).
As the release has been put further back (from dec to 1st q of 2011!!!)
Im wondering if i should of got the n900, enjoy it and sell it when the new meego phones come out.
I think the best thing is wait untill 2011 and see what the manufacturers will do with the new meego phones.

thanks for the reply.
to be honest i was expecting a more encouraging reply
wait for another 6 months?
i saw a "leaked" picture of the n9 you say and it looks like it's folding and not slide (which has worse flexcable on the screen)
today i found out that WebOs (Palm) apps and games can be installed on n900...
they way i see it, we'll always be waiting for a new phone, so why not just do as you said "should of got the n900, enjoy it and sell it when the new meego phones come out" which i totally agree.
I'm still waiting for a n900 users replies as they should know better (no offence) whether it still worths 500euro.

MeeGo aka the new OS, wont be finished until January. Its relatively new, just like Symbian^3, so be patient if you really want it.
As for N900, it depends. The phone can be overclocked to double speed, and personally i think its a great piece of hardware.
It will be able to run MeeGo, as there are now weekly builds of MeeGo for it. However theyre not fully functional, you wont be able to fully use it or anything, but thats the state of MeeGo right now.
But Maemo isnt dead either, there are still games incoming and they are still made/ported.

I was thinking of changing the N97 with a N900 but I have doubts in whether it's worth it. I know the N900 is a better phone hardware wise but I don't know if it's worth investing and switching to a phone that has an already "outdated" and almost unsupported (by Nokia) software...
Will I regret switching to it?

I had a N900 until a couple months back, but the stupid micro USB thingy fell off
. Actually it was nice to have it, the screen is amazing, you can browse the internet just as fast and well as in a computer (except for some Flash 10 stuff), the keyboard is quite nice and the camera is not bad either but, the best thing to do about deciding on getting that phone is playing with it yourself, there are some things that the N900 lacks and many of us got used to using it in Symbian, so they may be deal breakers for you.
Also, the N900 is not a "phone trying to be a computer", it's more of a "computer trying to be a phone", it may be kinda complicated to get used to the phone at first, but if you're like me and like to mess with your "toys" you'll be fine
.
Yeah, I got a way to let you "try" the phone
http://apu.ndhub.net/devices?method=cas ... o773pgc-20
You can test various Nokia phones there for free, that should help you get a better idea of the phone
. But also, try to get the phone in your hands, the experience you'll get from the page will help you make a choice but, nothing beats having the phone in your hands.
If you want to see what apps are available, talk.maemo.org is a nice way to go to, and there are some videos on youtube of the apps.
Finally, don't take anyone's word for how awesome is a phone, you should try it by yourself. and with this phone, don't pay for "what you would get" (Maemo and other stuff that may happen), pay for what the phone is right now, otherwise you'll be dissapointed because Nokia kinda forgot about this phone.

I know what you mean, with the necessity to test it yourself. I am, to tell you the truth, fascinated by this phone. But I too feel that I got so used with the Symbian interface and functionality, that a change to Maemo would be hard. And as you said, certain things might be difficult to adjust to (if actually possible).
I too like to play. I've made CFW's for my N97, but the N97 is so horrible that nothing can save it from itself.
I fear that the N900 would overwhelm me. Too much modding maybe? I'll have to really think about this. And the fact that Nokia does not care about this "phone" is not at all a positive aspect, at least not for me.

Modding is what you make it to be. I have kept away from modding the transitions (for a while).
The fact that Nokia dont support it doesnt make a big difference.. its just like when it was supported...
The community takes care of more than Nokia. Thats why we have more codecs than originally.
The transition i had from 5800 to N900 lasted a day.
However, you should also consider N900 vs N8. N8 is more supported, and an update with some nice improvements isnt far away. I tried the N8, and it feels nice. The phone feels solid as rock, but still slim. The menu-button is soft, and the screen is amazingly vibrant because of AMOLED.
BUT... most important thing is to try both yourself. Someone else's opinion of the feel isnt the best to follow. (Thats why i dont care about the N900 being... thick...)
